Renowned for pioneering totally endoscopic cardiac surgery, Dr. Antonios Pitsis has led over 15,000 operations, significantly enhancing patient outcomes. He's acclaimed for innovative techniques and training hundreds of cardiac surgeons globally. His work, underpinned by extensive clinical research, publications and invention of surgical instruments, showcases his expertise and dedication to advancing patient care.
This is my current appointment in Cardiac Surgery. Currently I perform on average 400 to 450 cardiac cases a year, most of these cases being Totally Endoscopic (200 - 250 cases a year) and other Minimally Invasive Procedures. During my latest appointment my main focus is in teaching and training and creating a new generation of totally endoscopic cardiac surgeons, in order to optimize patient outcomes.
This was the first job of Dr. Pitsis, as Head of Cardiac Surgery in Greece, after his extensive stay abroad, and lasted for almost 22 years. He established a very busy private practice cardiac surgery department, performing up to 900 cardiac operations per year.
He developed many innovative minimally invasive cardiac surgery procedures and also he established his department as a referral center for heart failure surgery and mechanical circulatory support.
He organized many national and international congresses and performed live surgery in many of those.
He also established a training center in Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery.
This was a joint appointment from the University of Bristol as a Senior Lecturer to Professor Gianni Angelini and the NHS as a NHS Consultant in Cardiac Surgery.
During this appointment I had the opportunity to perform extensive clinical research under the guidance of Professor Angelini, while practicing a busy clinical practice in the NHS. During this period I developed innovative beating heart coronary revascularization procedures and had many publications which are among the most cited publications in cardiac surgery in the beating heat - off pump field.
This was a very busy senior training appointment in Cardiothoracic Surgery, where I was practising under the remote or direct supervision of a group of NHS Consultants, performing many hundreds of Cardiac and Thoracic operations every year.
This was a great specialist training appointment where I had the opportunity to get extensive training in all the aspects of Cerdiothoracic Surgery and how to become a competent clinician.
A great first appointment as a junior doctor in the U.K., in the most famous Cardiothoracic unit of the U.K. and also a leading unit of the whole world. I had the opportunity to work with giants in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart and Lung Transplantation like Sir Terence English, Mr. John Wallwork and Mr. Francis Wells.
My first training appointment in Cardiac Surgery, in a very busy university hospital, clinically as as well as academically oriented..
My first training job as a medical doctor in a very busy academic department of general surgery.
1 Expert in Totally Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery I have trained hundreds of surgeons from around the globe I have established a highly successful endoscopic cardiac surgery training center, with hundreds of visitors all attending my practice
2Proctor in Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery for many of the biggest companies of the medical industry, like Medtronic, Edwards, LSI Solutions, etc and have proctored cases in France, Germany, Austria, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus
3 Academic surgeon with over a hundred publications in the PubMed, around four-thousand citations, weekly participation in international congresses as speaker, many chapters in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Textbooks
4Founding member and member of the steering group of the Endoscopic Cardiac Surgeons Club (ecscluborg, est 2021)
5 Board member of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgical Society
(ISMICS, ismicsorg)
6 I have performed totally endoscopic live surgeries of new innovative techniques for the treatment of structural heart disease, in many of the most renowned
international congresses in cardiac surgery including the European Association for Cardiac Surgery Annual / Tecno-College Meeting 2022 (Milan) and 2023 (Vienna), Focus Valve 2022 and 2023 (Innsbruck), Endoscopic Cardiac Surgeons Club 2022, Master of Valve Therapy 2022 (Berlin)
7 Inventor of a series of endoscopic surgical instruments (Delacroix Chevalier)
