Lead the strategic direction and development of the Art & Design department in line with departmental policies and whole-school goals.
Manage subject staff, including classroom performance, teaching support, behavioral management, professional development and mentoring.
Oversee curriculum design, ensuring progression, coherence and compliance with Cambridge exam board requirements (Lower Secondary/KS3, GCSE, AS Level and A Level).
Set and monitor subject targets, track student progress, through ISAMS, and use data to inform improvement and planning.
Yearly exam analysis and department target setting, with line manager/exams officer.
Manage departmental budget, resources, equipment, materials and facilities.
Teaching & Learning
Plan, implement and evaluate high-quality, creative teaching and learning experiences.
Lead curriculum innovation, ensuring breadth, balance and appropriate differentiation.
Promote effective assessment practices, including moderation, feedback and tracking of outcomes.
Ensure Health & Safety standards are met in practical studios, workshops and specialist areas.
Liaise with HOD’s and share pupil concerns and good classroom practice.
Update and enhance easy use for departmental resources online through OneDrive.
Student Support & Enrichment
Foster a positive, inclusive and aspirational culture across all Art & Design courses.
Ensure a safe and productive learning environment for all pupils.
Support individuals with additional needs and tailor lesson plans to accommodate all learning abilities.
Coordinate extracurricular opportunities (clubs, competitions, exhibitions, trips, community engagements).
Guide student progression to higher education or creative careers.
Ensure supportive pastoral care during form time and detailed planning for group PSHE lessons.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with senior leadership, pastoral teams and cross-curricular departments to enhance student experience.
Liaise with parents/guardians about student progress, events and expectations.
Build external communications (museums, galleries, universities, Alumni, local artists, workshops and industry links).
Quality & Accountability
Evaluate teaching quality through observations, drop ins, learning walks and student voice.
Lead departmental self-evaluation and contribute to whole-school development planning.
Prepare reports, presentations and evidence for inspection and school requirements.
Promotion of the Subject
Displays of Art & Design across the school and within the Art department.
Organise students work in the form of annual, public exhibitions.
Keep abreast of national developments, policies and best practice in art education through literature and the GTCS.
Cambridge International (CIE)
Lead and manage the delivery of Cambridge International Art & Design (IGCSE and AS/A Level) in line with Cambridge assessment objectives and standards.
Design and implement a full, creative curriculum that ensures clear progression across all components and assessment objectives (exam and coursework portfolio-based assessment).
Oversee coursework planning, authentication and internal moderation to ensure accuracy, fairness and compliance with CIE regulations.
Ensure students meet portfolio, sketchbook and final outcome requirements in line with Cambridge schemes of work.
Monitor student progress using assessment data and visual evidence to maximise outcomes.
Lead staff training on CIE mark schemes, examiner reports and moderation expectations.
Regular online and face-to-face courses offered with CIE.
Manage and quality-assure externally assessed work, including exam preparation by photographing and submitting all work online to Cambridge.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Cambridge International syllabus updates, standards and best practice through the Cambridge Support Hub.
Coordinate exam administration processes in collaboration with the exams officer.
Ensure Health & Safety compliance within all practical areas.
